Deadly hurricane Stan has blown ashore in
Mexico, after killing at least 38 people in Central America.
The Category 1 hurricane made landfall
Tuesday morning, hitting southeast of Veracruz, near Punta Roca Partida on
the east coast of Mexico, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
A hurricane warning is in effect for the Gulf Coast from Palma
Sola to Chilitepec.
The storm was upgraded to a hurricane
early Tuesday and is now churning winds of 130 kilometres per hour.
It is expected to produce 13 to 38 centimetres of rain and a storm surge
of 0.6 to 1.2 metres, with dangerous waves.
Veracruz is a popular tourist destination
and a business centre, with a population of over half a million people.
The city closed its port and schools in anticipation of Stan's arrival,
while thousands of residents evacuated to shelters along the coast.
Officials have been warning of possible flooding and landslides.
Several oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico
were evacuated in advance of the storm.
The industry has lost much production
during this active hurricane season. Stan is the 18th named storm in the
Atlantic this year, making it one of the busiest years ever.
38 dead in Central America
As a tropical storm, Stan dumped heavy rain
on El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, causing flooding and landslides,
washing out roads, and destroying buildings.
As of Monday, officials had reported 30
deaths in El Salvador alone, where the government declared a national red
alert. Four people were killed in Guatemala and four in Honduras.
